This bespoke training course has been specifically designed for PSI members to provide participants with a clear and practical understanding of the key legal and regulatory issues relevant to psychologists in private practice.
The course will address a range of important topics, including:
- Explaining the key principles of legal accountability relevant to psychologists working in private practice, including professional responsibility, negligence and duty of care.
- Identifying and responding appropriately to situations that may give rise to legal or professional liability, including complaints, potential claims and litigation.
- Applying relevant legal principles to common scenarios arising in private practice and identify when a matter should be escalated for specialist legal or professional advice.
- Applying appropriate record-keeping practices, including the creation, storage, retention, disclosure and secure disposal of clinical and professional records.
- Responding appropriately to requests for records and personal data, taking account of confidentiality, data protection requirements and relevant legal obligations.
- Understanding and applying key GDPR and data protection principles in the day-to-day operation of a private psychology practice.
- Briefly evaluating the role of AI in practice.
- Recognising and responding appropriately to subpoenas, court orders and other legal requests for information, including understanding when legal advice may be required.
- Applying the principles of confidentiality and disclosure and identifying circumstances in which disclosure of confidential information may be required, permitted or prohibited.
- Identifying the legal and practical steps required for practice closure, including planned closure and arrangements required in the event of a psychologist’s incapacity or death.
The training will be delivered live via Zoom, with an emphasis on the practical application of legal principles to professional practice. Dedicated time will be provided for participants to raise general questions and discuss concerns arising from the course content. The course will not be recorded and slides are provided.
